How Classic Literature, Martin Luther King Jr, and You Can Change the World

When I need to have comfort, I ask others directly to “tell me something sweet.” Recently I asked this of my husband and the comparison of classic literature came to be. How my writing reminds him more of the classics and less of pop-culture. How because of me; he has read more things like The Time Machine, the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Bram Stroker’s Dracula, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Catcher and the Rye, and more.  Perhaps this is because of my own love of the classics. No matter the genre or story, most of them were taking a stand. They expose universal truths and the raw, realness of the taboo. The classics paint pictures and take you on travels and adventures you’d never see in a theater. They make your feelings acute and at times face your own demons and opinions.

I find many authors to be my role models. No, not athletes, models, actresses, or musicians. Most people, though they work very hard, they are not putting themselves, their beliefs, their experiences on paper for another person to learn from. Yes, artists of all forms suffer for their art… but how many of them truly leave you thinking and questioning the world in which we live and the actions you put forth…  As a lover of books, authors, and quotes; a few of my favorites are Khalil Gabran, Dante Aligheri, William Shakespeare, JR Tolkien, Sarah Williams, and Martin Luther King Jr.  Read more »

Manic Holiday Hangover Monday

Sight vs. Experience

The Monday after a holiday always seems to be the worst. It is almost like it is bitter and vengeful of all the fun you had on the better days of the week… Thanksgiving here was a 5 day holiday starting on Wednesday. Monday= pissed off. Read more »

Manic Double Edge Monday

Welcome back to Monday. Now that Summer is here, the weekend hangover is but ten times harder to get out of the system. Two days are just not enough time to  accomplish all the fun that this season provides. Throw children into the mix and the amped-up fun can equal amped up stress for the parental folks… Luckily I have found a way to relieve some stress while entertaining those crazy little people.

Forget the splash pad. Forget the pool. Forget the park. Forget playdates. Let’s go old school. Read more »

Manic Dear Husband Monday

It is Monday yet again. Oh what is that? You’re wondering why I am up starting Monday at midnight thirty? Simply put: Faith will not move Mount Cotton. So if I want this Mountain to move, I have to put faith in the good old washer and dryer and my motivation… if I can find it. Luckily, that motivation has come in the form of late night nausea in which my meds aren’t touching. Any distraction helps. As most women know, men suck at laundry. Unless you are fortunate and they have a stern mother or have a OCD habit. It is not so much the sorting, temperatures, and such that are the biggest of men’s(our) laundry problems. It is the lack of being able to take things out of pockets. Read more »

Manic GROSS! Monday

Meh, it is Monday. Many find it gross. We have to get up early. Have to go back to work. Have to get out of bed. Ugh. Well, some days if that is the worst of it, its alright. I have a gross habit that I tend to on most Mondays. I actually have to tend to it about two to three times a week. It just always seems worse on a Monday. Read more »

Manic Monday- Wait is this ME?

Welcome back to Monday. Mondays are those days when you wake to the alarm clock and realize, this is my life. Slam the  alarm in rebellion. Ten more minutes… Then slowly you drag yourself out of bed and make yourself do what you dread, face Monday. Go.

Well today I had the same “face the facts” about my family. Read more »

The Hustle Bustle of Mediocrity

We always have somewhere we are needed. If not, we always have something we need to do. If not, there is always something someone else needs us to do. If not, there is something we want to do.  If not… Panic.

Can you go for a drive and enjoy the scenery without being honked at, passed, or almost run off the road. Can you take the family adventuring for hours without blocking time from the schedule first or planning in advance? Can we fall off the face of the earth to figure things out for a few days without extreme penalty? Can we step back, step away, let go, move on, be still, or  just BE? Read more »
